PART 3

The motorcycle engine screamed outside.

Derek stood beside it with a grin on his face.

โ€œYou wanted to play soldier?โ€

He pointed toward Ranger.

โ€œLetโ€™s see how tough you are when I take your dog.โ€

The soldier stood beneath the tavern lights.

His name was Sergeant Cole Bennett.

He had spent twelve years in the Army.

He had been shot once.

Blown off his feet twice.

He had watched men disappear from his life in places whose names most Americans couldnโ€™t pronounce.

But nothing had ever made him as angry as the sight of Ranger bleeding on that tavern floor.

Cole looked at Derek.

โ€œYou have five seconds.โ€

Derek laughed.

โ€œFor what?โ€

โ€œTo leave.โ€

Derek shook his head.

โ€œNo.โ€

Cole nodded.

โ€œFour.โ€

One biker lifted the tire iron.

โ€œThree.โ€

The biker stepped forward.

โ€œTwo.โ€

Derek shouted.

โ€œGet him!โ€

The biker charged.

Cole moved sideways.

The tire iron swung past his shoulder.

Cole caught the attackerโ€™s wrist and twisted.

The tire iron fell.

Cole kicked it away.

The second biker rushed from behind.

Cole turned.

The man stopped when he saw Coleโ€™s eyes.

For one second, neither moved.

Then the biker lowered his hands.

โ€œI donโ€™t want this.โ€

โ€œThen leave.โ€

The man looked at Derek.

Derek screamed.

โ€œAre you serious?โ€

The biker stepped backward.

โ€œIโ€™m done.โ€

He walked toward his motorcycle.

Derek stared at him.

โ€œYou coward!โ€

The biker ignored him.

Cole looked at the remaining attacker.

โ€œYour turn.โ€

The man dropped his hands.

โ€œIโ€™m leaving.โ€

Derek was now alone.

His face turned red.

โ€œYouโ€™re all useless!โ€

He reached toward his motorcycle.

Cole shouted.

โ€œDonโ€™t.โ€

Derek stopped.

โ€œWalk away.โ€

Derek looked at him.

Then smiled.

โ€œYou think youโ€™ve won?โ€

โ€œNo.โ€

Cole glanced toward Ranger.

โ€œI think you still donโ€™t understand.โ€

โ€œUnderstand what?โ€

โ€œYou attacked the wrong dog.โ€

Derek laughed.

โ€œWhat does that even mean?โ€

Cole stepped closer.

โ€œRanger isnโ€™t dangerous because he can bite.โ€

Derekโ€™s smile faded.

โ€œHeโ€™s dangerous because he knows exactly when to protect someone.โ€

Cole looked toward the tavern.

Ranger was standing near the door.

Three legs.

Blood on his face.

Eyes locked on Derek.

Cole held up one hand.

Ranger stopped.

Derek stared.

The dog didnโ€™t move.

Cole lowered his hand.

Ranger remained still.

Derek whispered.

โ€œHow?โ€

Cole answered.

โ€œYears of training.โ€

Then he looked at Ranger.

โ€œYears of trust.โ€

Derek shook his head.

โ€œYouโ€™re crazy.โ€

Cole smiled.

โ€œNo.โ€

He pointed at Ranger.

โ€œWeโ€™re disciplined.โ€

Derek suddenly pulled something from inside his vest.

The bartender shouted.

โ€œCole!โ€

Derek raised a broken bottle.

He charged toward Ranger.

Cole moved instantly.

But Ranger moved first.

The dog stepped forward.

Cole shouted.

โ€œRANGER!โ€

The dog stopped.

Derek froze.

The broken glass was inches from the dogโ€™s face.

Cole stared at Derek.

โ€œYou almost made him break command.โ€

Derek looked confused.

โ€œWhat?โ€

Cole walked forward.

โ€œYou know why thatโ€™s important?โ€

Derek said nothing.

โ€œBecause Ranger trusts me more than he trusts his own instincts.โ€

Cole looked at his partner.

โ€œAnd I trust him more than I trust anyone.โ€

Ranger slowly backed up.

Cole pointed toward the floor.

โ€œDown.โ€

Ranger obeyed.

Derekโ€™s hands began shaking.

Cole stepped toward him.

โ€œPut it down.โ€

Derek looked at the bottle.

Then at Cole.

โ€œYouโ€™re going to arrest me?โ€

โ€œNo.โ€

โ€œThen what?โ€

Cole pointed toward the road.

โ€œIโ€™m going to let the police handle it.โ€

Derek laughed nervously.

โ€œYou think Iโ€™m going to wait here?โ€

He turned.

A pair of headlights appeared at the end of the road.

Then another.

Derek froze.

The tavern doors opened.

Two police cruisers pulled into the parking lot.

Derek looked at Cole.

โ€œYou called them?โ€

Cole shook his head.

The bartender raised his hand.

โ€œI did.โ€

Derek stared at him.

The bartender pointed toward the security camera above the door.

โ€œYouโ€™ve been on camera since you walked in.โ€

Derekโ€™s face fell.

The officers stepped out.

โ€œDrop the bottle!โ€

Derek looked around.

There was nowhere to go.

He dropped it.

The glass shattered on the pavement.

The officers approached.

Derek began talking rapidly.

โ€œHe attacked me!โ€

Cole said nothing.

โ€œI was defending myself!โ€

The bartender stepped outside.

โ€œNo, you werenโ€™t.โ€

The older veteran followed.

โ€œI saw everything.โ€

The other bikers came forward.

One of them nodded.

โ€œSo did we.โ€

Derek looked at them.

โ€œYouโ€™re seriously turning on me?โ€

The first biker answered.

โ€œYou hit a wounded dog.โ€

The second added.

โ€œYou kept trying to hurt him.โ€

Derekโ€™s face changed.

The officer placed handcuffs on him.

โ€œYouโ€™re under arrest.โ€

Derek looked at Cole.

โ€œYou think this ends here?โ€

Cole didnโ€™t answer.

Derek was led toward the cruiser.

Then he stopped.

โ€œYou canโ€™t keep protecting that animal forever.โ€

Cole looked directly at him.

โ€œNo.โ€

He glanced toward Ranger.

โ€œOne day, he wonโ€™t need me.โ€

Ranger stepped closer.

Cole placed a hand on his head.

โ€œBut Iโ€™ll always need him.โ€

Derek was pushed into the cruiser.

The door slammed.

The parking lot finally became quiet.

Cole immediately turned toward Ranger.

โ€œCome here.โ€

Ranger limped toward him.

Cole knelt.

The dogโ€™s head dropped into his chest.

Cole closed his eyes.

โ€œIโ€™ve got you.โ€

Ranger breathed against his shoulder.

โ€œIโ€™ve got you.โ€

The older veteran watched them.

After a moment, he spoke.

โ€œSergeant.โ€

Cole looked up.

The man held the old photograph.

โ€œI owe you something.โ€

Cole shook his head.

โ€œNo.โ€

โ€œYes.โ€

The older man pointed at Ranger.

โ€œMy son died believing that dog would make it home.โ€

Cole looked down.

Rangerโ€™s eyes were closed.

โ€œHe did.โ€

The older man nodded.

โ€œI know.โ€

He wiped his eyes.

โ€œThank you.โ€

Cole stood.

โ€œMichael saved Ranger.โ€

The old man smiled sadly.

โ€œAnd Ranger saved you.โ€

Cole didnโ€™t answer.

Because it was true.

Three years earlier, after the explosion, Cole had carried Ranger through the dust while bullets struck the walls around them.

Ranger had lost his leg.

Cole had lost his closest friend.

But neither had been willing to leave the other behind.

Months later, Ranger received a titanium prosthetic.

Cole returned to duty.

People called Ranger brave.

People called Cole brave.

Neither of them believed it.

They simply knew one rule.

Never leave your partner behind.

That night, after the police left, the tavern slowly returned to normal.

The bartender brought a bowl of water.

Ranger drank.

The waitress brought a clean towel.

Cole carefully wiped the blood from Rangerโ€™s face.

The older veteran sat nearby.

He looked at the dog.

โ€œHeโ€™s beautiful.โ€

Cole smiled.

โ€œHeโ€™s stubborn.โ€

Ranger lifted his head.

Cole laughed.

โ€œYou heard that?โ€

Rangerโ€™s tail moved once.

Everyone smiled.

Then the bartender walked over.

โ€œSergeant.โ€

Cole looked up.

โ€œYes?โ€

โ€œI want to apologize.โ€

โ€œFor what?โ€

โ€œI didnโ€™t stop Derek sooner.โ€

Cole shook his head.

โ€œYou called the police.โ€

โ€œAfter it happened.โ€

โ€œYou still called.โ€

The bartender nodded.

Cole looked around the tavern.

โ€œThatโ€™s enough.โ€

Then something unexpected happened.

One by one, the people inside approached Ranger.

Nobody touched him without asking.

Some simply stood nearby.

Some said nothing.

The little girl who had been hiding behind her mother earlier walked toward him.

She held a small napkin in her hand.

โ€œCan I?โ€

Cole looked at Ranger.

Ranger looked at the girl.

Cole nodded.

The girl gently touched his head.

โ€œYouโ€™re a hero.โ€

Cole smiled.

โ€œHe doesnโ€™t think so.โ€

The girl looked at Ranger.

โ€œI do.โ€

Rangerโ€™s tail moved again.

The girl smiled.

โ€œSee?โ€

Cole laughed softly.

โ€œYeah.โ€

He looked at Ranger.

โ€œI see.โ€

Later that night, Cole carried Ranger into the back of his truck.

The dog rested on a padded blanket.

Cole checked his wounds.

โ€œYouโ€™re going to the vet tomorrow.โ€

Ranger stared at him.

โ€œDonโ€™t look at me like that.โ€

The dog blinked.

โ€œYouโ€™re going.โ€

Ranger looked away.

Cole smiled.

โ€œStill stubborn.โ€

He closed the truck door halfway.

Then stopped.

He remembered something.

He reached into the glove compartment.

Inside was an old military photograph.

Cole took it out.

It showed three soldiers standing beside Ranger.

Michael was in the middle.

Cole looked at the photograph.

Then at Ranger.

โ€œYou remember him?โ€

Ranger stared at the picture.

For several seconds, nothing happened.

Then Ranger placed his nose against Michaelโ€™s face in the photograph.

Cole froze.

His eyes filled with tears.

โ€œYeah.โ€

He whispered.

โ€œYou remember.โ€

Ranger looked at him.

Cole placed the photograph beside the dog.

โ€œYou know what?โ€

Ranger tilted his head.

โ€œWeโ€™re going to find his family.โ€

The dog rested his head on the blanket.

Cole smiled.

โ€œThatโ€™s our next mission.โ€

He closed the truck door.

But before he could walk away, his phone rang.

Unknown number.

Cole answered.

โ€œHello?โ€

A manโ€™s voice spoke.

โ€œIs this Sergeant Cole Bennett?โ€

โ€œYes.โ€

โ€œIโ€™ve been trying to reach you.โ€

โ€œWho is this?โ€

The man hesitated.

โ€œMy name is Daniel Mercer.โ€

Coleโ€™s expression changed.

โ€œOkay.โ€

โ€œI knew Michael.โ€

Cole looked back at Ranger.

โ€œHow?โ€

โ€œI was with his unit.โ€

Cole said nothing.

Daniel continued.

โ€œThere is something you need to know.โ€

Coleโ€™s heart began beating faster.

โ€œWhat?โ€

โ€œIt concerns the night Michael died.โ€

Cole froze.

โ€œWhat about it?โ€

Daniel lowered his voice.

โ€œMichael wasnโ€™t supposed to be on that convoy.โ€

Cole stared into the darkness.

โ€œWhat are you saying?โ€

โ€œHe was sent somewhere else.โ€

โ€œWhere?โ€

A pause.

โ€œNorth Ridge.โ€

Coleโ€™s face went pale.

He remembered that name.

A classified operation.

A mission nobody talked about.

A mission Michael had supposedly never been part of.

Cole whispered.

โ€œThatโ€™s impossible.โ€

Daniel replied.

โ€œI thought so too.โ€

Cole looked at Ranger.

The dog was staring directly at him.

โ€œWhy are you calling me now?โ€

โ€œBecause I found something.โ€

โ€œWhat?โ€

โ€œA file.โ€

Coleโ€™s grip tightened around the phone.

โ€œWhat file?โ€

โ€œThe original mission report.โ€

Silence.

โ€œAnd Sergeant?โ€

โ€œYes?โ€

โ€œMichael didnโ€™t die the way they told you.โ€

Cole stopped breathing.

โ€œWhat?โ€

Daniel continued.

โ€œHe wasnโ€™t killed by the convoy attack.โ€

Coleโ€™s eyes widened.

โ€œThen how did he die?โ€

The line went silent.

โ€œDaniel?โ€

Nothing.

โ€œDaniel!โ€

The call ended.

Cole stared at his phone.

He immediately called back.

The number was unavailable.

He looked toward Ranger.

The dog was sitting up.

Watching him.

Cole walked to the truck.

He opened the door.

Ranger looked at him.

Cole whispered.

โ€œLooks like weโ€™re not finished.โ€

Rangerโ€™s ears lifted.

Cole picked up the photograph.

Michael.

Ranger.

The old unit.

And a secret that had apparently survived three years.

Cole placed the photograph in his jacket.

Then he looked at his partner.

โ€œYou ready?โ€

Ranger slowly stood.

One titanium leg.

Three natural ones.

Still standing.

Cole smiled.

โ€œYeah.โ€

He closed the door.

The truck headlights came on.

As they disappeared into the night, the camera inside the tavern continued recording the empty parking lot.

But on the security monitor, something strange appeared.

A figure was standing across the road.

Watching Coleโ€™s truck leave.

The bartender leaned toward the screen.

โ€œWho is that?โ€

The older veteran looked.

His face suddenly went white.

He knew the man.

And he whispered the words nobody expected to hear.

โ€œThatโ€™s impossible.โ€

Because the man standing across the roadโ€ฆ

Was wearing Michaelโ€™s old military jacket.

And on the back of it was the same unit patch Cole had just seen in the photograph.

Three years after Michaelโ€™s death, someone was waiting in the darkness.

And whatever happened at North Ridgeโ€ฆ

Had just begun.

**The End.**
