He saw the wet uniform.

“Ava.”
“Yes, Dad.”

General Mateo Cordero stepped toward his daughter.
“Are you injured?”
“No, sir.”
“Are you sure?”
“Yes.”
He nodded once.

“You will.”

Mateo looked at Ava.

“I completed it again.”
“And when I ordered you to kneel?”

“I asked why.”
Thorne laughed bitterly.
“You see? That’s insubordination.”
General Cordero looked at his daughter.
“Did you disrespect the chain of command?”
“No.”
“Did you refuse a lawful order?”
“No.”
Mateo turned back toward Thorne.
“Then why was my daughter publicly humiliated?”
Thorne’s voice became defensive.
“Because discipline requires pressure.”
“Pressure?”
Mateo glanced at the bucket.
“Is that what you call pouring water over a soldier while insulting her family?”
Nobody answered.
The military attorney opened a folder.
“General Thorne, we have additional questions.”
Thorne looked at him.
“What questions?”
“Why was the exercise conducted outside the approved training schedule?”
Thorne froze.
The attorney continued.
“Why were cameras disabled in the training area?”

“And why did you personally order fifty soldiers to remain silent while Specialist Cordero was being punished?”
Thorne’s expression changed.
“That is classified.”
“No,” the attorney replied. “It isn’t.”
He held up a tablet.
“We have the security logs.”
Ava looked down.
She had suspected something was wrong from the beginning.
Three days earlier, she had reported that several training records had been altered.
The reports involved equipment failures, missing ammunition, and unauthorized access to a restricted storage facility.
She had expected an investigation.
Instead, she was suddenly transferred to Thorne’s unit.
Then the humiliation began.
Thorne had called her weak.
He had mocked her family.
He had ordered other soldiers to laugh at her.
But Ava had understood something.
He was not trying to discipline her.

The military attorney looked at Mateo.
“General Cordero, there is more.”
He handed him another document.

“Where did you get this?”

“You should have asked yourself that before targeting my daughter.”

“This has nothing to do with her father.”
“No.”

“It has everything to do with the fact that she discovered something you desperately wanted hidden.”

“What did you tell them?”

“Nothing.”
“Then how?”
“I didn’t have to.”
She pointed toward the ceiling.
“The cameras were supposed to be disabled.”
Thorne stared at her.
“But one wasn’t.”
A soldier near the back suddenly stepped forward.
“Sir.”
Everyone turned.
He was a young private who had been standing silently throughout the confrontation.
Thorne glared at him.
“What?”
The private swallowed.
“I saw what happened that night.”
Thorne’s face hardened.
“You saw nothing.”
“I saw Specialist Cordero enter the storage building.”
Ava looked at him.
The private continued.
“She found the missing equipment.”
Thorne stepped forward.
“You’d better be careful.”
The private’s voice trembled.
“But she wasn’t stealing anything.”
He looked at General Cordero.
“She was photographing it.”
Mateo’s expression remained unreadable.
“Why?”
The private looked at Ava.
“Because the serial numbers had been changed.”
The hallway went completely silent.

“That is what I reported.”
The military attorney opened another file.
“Those weapons were listed as destroyed six months ago.”
Mateo looked at Thorne.
“Yet they were found inside your restricted warehouse.”
Thorne shook his head.
“I had no knowledge of that.”
“Then you won’t mind answering questions.”
Two military police officers stepped forward.
Thorne immediately raised his voice.
“You cannot arrest a general based on the word of a specialist.”
Mateo’s voice cut through the room.
“No one is arresting you because of her rank.”
He stepped closer.
“You are being detained because the evidence leads to you.”
Thorne looked around.
For the first time, he seemed to understand.
The soldiers who had laughed earlier were no longer looking at him.
They were looking at Ava.

Thorne suddenly pointed at her.
“She manipulated all of this!”
Ava remained calm.
“You were the one who underestimated me.”
Thorne’s eyes narrowed.
“You think your father can protect you forever?”
Mateo stepped between them.
“My daughter doesn’t need protection from you.”
He looked directly into Thorne’s eyes.
“She needs a military where officers like you cannot abuse their authority.”
The officers escorted Thorne away.
But before he disappeared through the doors, he stopped.
He looked back at Ava.
“You have no idea what you’ve started.”
Ava met his stare.
“Yes, I do.”
She paused.
“I started telling the truth.”
The doors closed.
The soldiers remained silent.
Then General Cordero turned toward the fifty men and women standing in formation.
“Every one of you witnessed what happened today.”
Nobody moved.
“You will be asked what you saw.”
His voice softened.
“And this time, tell the truth.”
Ava watched the soldiers.
Some looked ashamed.
Others looked relieved.
One young female soldier quietly approached her.
“Specialist Cordero?”
Ava turned.
The woman hesitated.
“I’m sorry.”
Ava smiled faintly.
“You don’t have to apologize for what he did.”
The soldier lowered her voice.
“I was afraid to speak.”
“I know.”
Ava placed a hand on her shoulder.
“Next time, don’t wait until someone powerful walks through the door.”
The soldier nodded.
Behind them, military police led Harris Thorne down the corridor.
But nobody noticed the second officer quietly removing a classified file from his briefcase.
Ava did.
And when she saw the name printed across the top, her expression changed.
